August 25th marks a very important day for my family: my mother's birthday. This year we celebrated ALL day long. We walked downtown first thing in the morning and enjoyed a sip at One World and a sweet from Wheatberries. There's nothing like sipping coffee while watching small town Moscow wake-up and buzz with student enthusiasm. (U of I and WSU have just started back up; Moscow's population has doubled within one week.) The party train continued at home. We sipped more coffee (yikes, I know) and laughed and planned and remembered birthdays gone by. San Francsisco, Astro Van...my mom has some wonderful birthday stories:) When we had drank enough coffee and covered all the basis for discussion, my mom and I headed out to the picking farm to get some birthday flowers. The picking farm is the one of the best features of the Palouse: you can pay seven dollars and fill a sand-bucket full of as many flowers as you can pick. The flowers are beautifully cared for and so bright and cheery. We got two buckets full and then hurried back to meet with Ben and Stacey and the kids for lunch. The afternoon found us fiddling with Red Velvet Cake and Icing Sugar...which made for a delicious birthday treat. But before we could enjoy cake and ice cream, we hurried off to the river to get in a quick ski before the sun went down. Of course we brought birthday dinner with us, put the little grill in the boat, the cobs of corn and the hot dogs too and found our sandy spot on the other side of the river. We all skied, swam, talked and laughed. It was dark by the time we got the boat out of the water. But it was so worth it...

When we got home we put the cake together (it was kind of floppy, tasted great but looked kind of funny:) Sang happy birthday and opened a few presents. Whew, what a day! Happy Birthday Mom!
