And There Was Great Rejoicing

This week I had a patient who was extremely skinny.
And I had to give her an injection.
The only injections I have given have been on healthy, young people --
People who still have soft, elastic skin that permits the needle to actually puncture.
This patient had tough skin and absolutely no fat.
First morning was a disaster. The skin did not let the needle puncture.
I turned bright red and a little bit frantic.
(They don't teach us how to do this in lab!)
Tried again--harder--needle punctured (finally, whew).
And there was great rejoicing.
