| Bring it! |
Having finished summer camp, I was anticipating some quiet, relaxed summer afternoons...maybe a little reading and/or other things that involve a lazy summer day. On quite the contrary, coming home has been everything but a lazy summer day. From unpacking, to doing laundry, to seeing old friends, to entertaining, to running around like crazy, to anticipating yet another big transition, to planning and registering for next year (seriously? is it really that time again?) there have been no dull moments.

We rode the Hiawatha Bike trail on Sunday. It's an old rail road track that has been converted into a rocky bike path. It's great fun for bikers because you go over trestles and through tunnels. Essentially, you're a train. The longest tunnel is 1.8 miles long. It gets dark in there, and it's pretty cold too. You come out with a skunk stripe of mud up your back side and a huge wave of relief meets you with the first glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel. It's mostly a mind game as you ride along in the dark. You hear water rushing inside the tunnel, you feel it dripping on you or you ride through big, muddy puddles. It's a little creepy, but you know you're going to be ok. So you just keep riding, trying to maintain your wits about you, steadying your handle bars and looking earnestly for light.

On the way down, we managed to find a plethora of huckleberries. We filled our packs with berries and rolled on down the hill. Sadie and Dylan were enthralled with stories of Bozo the Bear, the long-standing member of all Bowen family bed time (and otherwise) stories. Thanks to Grandma, Bozo accompanied us all the way up and down the Hiawatha. We looked for his cave, we picked in his berry patch, we listened for him rustling in the bushes and we told stories of his adventures all the way home.

And it's been sorting, packing and planning time ever since. We (my mother and I) have been trying to take full advantage of summer bounty. The garden is growing gang-busters (zuccini is coming out our ears!) and the growers market is fresh and full. I'm trying to stay smart about planning for classes, activities, and all the joys of a new school year. In the meantime (the few weeks before returning to LLU), I will be doing some traveling. Yes, I have planning and packing to do, but you know, a girl's gotta travel when she has the time. So between loads of laundry and trips to Goodwill, I'll be planning and packing for a little summer getaway. Bon voyage mes amis!!
